Luke Hemmings gives Kelly Clarkson a lot of credit for helping him meet his wife.
During an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 5 Seconds of Summer singer, 27, revealed that he would have never crossed paths with his wife, singer Sierra Deaton, years ago in Los Angeles if it wasn’t for Clarkson winning the first season of American Idol.
“I don’t know if you know this, but I owe my whole marriage to you,” Hemmings told the talk show host. “She watched you on American Idol and that made her want to go on X-Factor, and she won X-Factor, which made her move to L.A. when I did, and that’s how we met.”
A shocked Clarkson revealed she was unaware of how she influenced the pair’s meet-cute story, but told Hemmings, “You’re welcome.” In return, he said the couple may consider naming any of their future children after Clarkson. “I think it’s a great name, boy or girl,” she said.
Hemmings and Deaton, 33, started dating in February 2018 and went Instagram official with their relationship five months later. Fast forward to June 2021, the pair announced via Instagram that they got engaged. At the time, a source told PEOPLE that Hemmings popped the big question in an intimate setting in Malibu, California.
“With shaking hands but a full heart I proposed to my best friend earlier this year,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “I love you Thao and I can’t imagine my life without you ❤️ @sierradeaton.”
In her own post, Deaton excitedly shared the news of the pair’s engagement, writing, “it was fun keeping this a secret for so long, but my heart is nearly bursting at the seams. can’t wait for forever ???? @lukehemmings.”
During Billboard‘s Golden Globes afterparty back in January, Hemmings casually confirmed that he and Deaton tied the knot. When commenting on his eye makeup, he told Entertainment Tonight, “Thank you! My wife did it. Usually I do it for stage but she’s taught me well and she did it tonight. It’s a big event so she did it.”
When asked about an update on married life, Hemmings replied that things were “good.” He added, “It’s very good. I love it.”
Hemmings released his second solo work, the seven-song EP boy, late last month.
