Billie Joe Armstrong has been married to his wife Adrienne Armstrong since 1994.
Billie Joe, lead vocalist of Green Day, has had a long and successful music career, reaching number one in the charts with three of his band’s albums and winning five Grammy Awards along the way.
But he’s had his wife by his side to support him ever since 1994, when they got back together and got married after first meeting in 1990. Since then, they’ve had two children together and gone into business with each other, too. In 2016, he told Collider, “My wife is the CEO of the family. I’m the fun guy, just trying to make it up as I go along.”
He told Esquire in 2024, “I married the right person. That’s a big deal. My wife really was smarter than I was. I was more spontaneous and wild, where she could be more practical and knew how to make plans better. But we were the right people for each other.”
So who is Billie Joe Armstrong’s wife? Here’s everything to know about Adrienne Armstrong and her relationship with the Green Day frontman.
Adrienne has a famous brother
Adrienne is from Minneapolis and was born to Joann and Joseph Nesser in 1966. She has two sisters: Natalie and Susan, and two brothers: Aaron and Steve. Steve is famous for being a professional skateboarder.
Adrienne attended Minnesota State University, per and interview she did with Mankato Free Press in 2009, and graduated in 1993 with a degree in sociology. Before that, she went to the University of Minnesota and then Minneapolis Community College. While living and studying in Mankato, Minn., she worked in shops and restaurants.
They met in 1990
Adrienne first met Billie Joe when she went to watch a Green Day show in Minneapolis in 1990. Per Mankato Free Press, she asked him where to get a copy of Green Day’s CD, and they kept in touch, speaking over the phone while Billie Joe was away on tour with his band.
They dated for a while, but ended things due to distance, and Adrienne later got engaged to another musician, Billy Bisson of the Libido Boyz.
Adrienne and Billie Joe married in 1994
Adrienne and Billie Joe got married in July 1994 — after she finished college, Billie Joe asked her to move to California. Adrienne told Mankato Free Press, “I was totally scared. But super excited. It was a new adventure, and I was ready … I figured I’d give it the summer and see what happened.”
“I was out two weeks and Billie Joe asked me to marry him,” she added.
20 years later, they renewed their vows in Las Vegas with a vintage grunge-style ceremony in front of their children and families.
Adrienne has two sons with Billie Joe
The day after she married Billie Joe, Adrienne discovered that she was pregnant with their first child. Joseph Marciano “Joey” Armstrong was born on Feb. 28, 1995, and went on to become the drummer of the band SWMRS until 2020.
Adrienne and Billie Joe’s younger son, Jakob Danger Armstrong, was born on Sept. 12, 1998. He’s also a musician, and plays in the band Ultra Q. In February 2014, Billie Joe told Rolling Stone about entering into marriage and fatherhood in quick succession, “I was very impulsive at that time. I think that impulsive behavior was meant to counteract the chaos in my life.”
She has over 100,000 Instagram followers
Adrienne is active on social media, and has over 100,000 followers on Instagram and over 90,000 on X (formerly Twitter). She often posts photos of herself and Billie Joe on Instagram, including both current pictures and throwbacks.
In January 2024, to mark the release of Green Day’s album Saviors, she posted a photo of herself with Billie Joe and added the caption, “So damn proud of this man & the entire Green Day family. I love you.”
For Father’s Day in 2020, she posted photos of Billie Joe and their sons as well as one of her own father, with the caption: “Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, and incredibly grateful for the dads in my life.”
Adrienne is politically engaged
Like her husband, Adrienne is vocal when it comes to politics and social issues — particularly on social media.
In June 2020, she posted an image on Instagram urging people to vote, while in May 2019 she spoke out against abortion bans in the U.S. and, in the same month, raised awareness of climate change leading to the extinction of animal species. She has also shared reposts on X in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and LGBTQ+ pride.
Adrienne has worked with the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group, too. In November 2011, she took part in an advertising campaign alongside her husband to urge people to give “green gifts” that Christmas.
She is a business owner
Per SFGate, Adrienne opened a business selling clothing and home goods, Atomic Garden, in Oakland, Calif., with her friend Jamie Kidson, in 2007. Armstrong said in 2012, “What’s been most meaningful to us over the last five years are the people — near and far — who have made all of the beautiful things we carry in our shop. Their time and commitment to quality is inspiring.”
Adrienne also co-owned Adeline Records, the record label she founded with her husband and some of their friends in 1997. The record label worked with a number of artists, most often Californian punk bands, before it closed down in 2017. In 2009, Adrienne told Mankato Free Press that she “worked the label for years when it first started,” though she explained at the time that she didn’t “do anything with Adeline Records anymore.”
Adrienne is passionate about fashion
Adrienne has been interested in fashion since she was young, and per Mankato Free Press, co-owned Adeline Street, a clothing line that operated alongside Adeline Records.
And, in 2006, she attended a gala for the exhibition AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City with her husband.
Adrienne has inspired some of Billie Joe’s music
Adrienne has inspired a number of Billie Joe’s songs, going back to “2000 Light Years Away” from Green Day’s 1991 album Kerplunk. Meanwhile, the song “80” from 1994’s Dookie is also about Adrienne — one of her nicknames is Adie, which sounds like ‘80’.
In January 2024, Billie Joe told PEOPLE that some of the songs on Saviors are inspired by his wife and children, too, including “Bobby Sox,” which “started off as being a song about my wife and us just sitting on the couch and watching The Office together over and over again.” Meanwhile, the song “Father to a Son” was inspired by fatherhood and Billie Joe’s relationship with his sons.
Billie Joe described his marriage with Adrienne as a “beautiful thing”
Speaking to PEOPLE in 2024, Billie Joe discussed his relationship with Adrienne after 29 years of marriage. He said, “We’ve definitely had challenges. Me and Adrienne, we’ve just been through so much in our life together, and it’s like we make this commitment to each other. And I’ve definitely f—ed up in my time as being a husband, and so we just got through stuff.”
He continued, “We started out as kids — now here we are spending our middle age together. It’s a beautiful thing. We’ve been through so much in our life, and we’ve always been able to come out stronger. I’ll take all of the good and the bad; I wouldn’t change a thing.”
