‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Starts Production on Sixth and Final Season

News

Production on the highly anticipated sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale has finally begun.

Hulu announced the news on Friday, Sept. 6, with a photo of Elisabeth Moss smiling from ear to ear while holding onto a clapboard.

“Guess who’s back? Production on the final season has officially started. #TheHandmaidsTale will return Spring 2025,” a post shared on Instagram read.

The announcement comes two years after the show, based on Margaret Atwood’s best-selling 1985 novel of the same name, was renewed for a sixth season ahead of its season 5 premiere.

It has been a true honor to tell the story of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and chillingly relevant world, and we are thrilled to bring viewers a sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale,” said creator and executive producer Bruce Miller at the time.

“We are grateful to Hulu and MGM for allowing us to tell this story, which unfortunately has remained as relevant as ever throughout its run, and are in awe of our incredible fans for their unwavering support, and without whom we never would have gotten to this point,” his statement continued.

While details about the season 6 plot have not been released, Miller said in a November 2022 interview with DigitalSpy: “We’re going to wrap it up on our own terms.”

“It’s something we never get with just the way the business is set up. And also, more importantly, not something everyone would give to the audience,” he said. “But I have the benefit of having had two things. I have a book. The book and the author is very much alive and very helpful to me.”

In addition to Moss, the season 6 cast will include Yvonne Strahovski (Serena Joy Waterford), Bradley Whitford (Commander Lawrence), Max Minghella (Nick), Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia), O.T. Fagbenle (Luke), Samira Wiley (Moira), Madeline Brewer (Janine), Amanda Brugel (Rita), Sam Jaeger (Mark Tuello) and Ever Carradine (Naomi Putnam). Josh Charles was announced as a new cast addition in July 2024.
