What Did Northwest Naturals Recall on December 02, 2024?
Northwest Naturals is voluntarily recalling its 2lb Feline Turkey Recipe raw & frozen pet food. The affected product details are as follows:
Package Size: 2-pound plastic bags
“Best if used by” Dates: 05/21/26 B10 and 06/23/26 B1
Why was the recall issued?
The Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) identified that the recalled pet food tested positive for the H5N1 strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Testing by the USDA and Oregon State University confirmed a genetic match between the virus in the raw pet food and a house cat in Washington County, Oregon, that died after consuming the product.
What happened, and were any pets injured?
The deceased house cat contracted H5N1 after eating the contaminated pet food. This was confirmed by genome sequencing, linking the virus in the pet food to the infection in the cat. No human cases of HPAI have been reported in connection with this recall, and the risk to humans remains low.

Health Advisory
Feeding raw meat to pets can lead to severe illness due to pathogens such as Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, and HPAI. Cooking meat thoroughly destroys these pathogens. The Oregon Health Authority continues to monitor household members exposed to the deceased cat and has not reported any human HPAI cases related to this incident.
