Popular and Expensive Los Angeles Grocery Store Reportedly Has Roaches

Erewhon, the immensely popular and expensive West Coast grocery store, has bugs.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reportedly found a roach at the fancy California retailer’s Santa Monica location, the Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday, April 10. 

Erewhon’s corporate office told the California news outlet, “We deeply regret that a roach was found in our tonic bar, and we sincerely apologize for this lapse in our standards.” An employee told the outlet that two cockroaches were found in the area where they make coffees and juices — including the $20+ smoothies pegged stars, like Hailey Bieber‘s Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie.

Los Angeles Times and Curbed cite an inspection report on the health department’s website of a “major” violation. PEOPLE found a screenshot of the April 8 report, which explains that part of the Erewhon location was closed for a “vermin infestation” and that certain restaurant seats were “high risk.”

According to the Erewhon spokesperson, the Santa Monica store voluntarily closed the tonic bar on Thursday, April 10, and plans to open the area again later that same day.

Erewhon did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Erewhon is best known for its luxury grocery experience and collaborative smoothies. All store locations are in California but the stores have entered the modern-day zeitgeist from its viral products, like a $19 strawberry and $30 cocktail ice.
