Firework Causes a Palm Tree to Catch Fire

Green Day brought the heat to Coachella — literally!

During the rock band’s headlining set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif., on Saturday, April 12, a firework hit a palm tree, causing it to catch fire, in the nearby artist section.

Green Day’s performance marked the “American Idiot” group’s debut at the annual music event. Previously, in 2014, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong performed as a guest with The Replacements, and on Friday, April 11, he joined the Go-Gos to perform their 1984 hit song “Head Over Heels.”

Their set featured a series of career-defining hits, in addition to songs from Green Day’s latest studio album, Saviors.

Back in August 2024, the band honored the 20th anniversary of their revolutionary punk album American Idiot by announcing the deluxe edition of the record that included unearthed demos and live performances. It was later released in October.

American Idiot marked a comeback for the group and shot Green Day back into the mainstream. It spawned several hits, including “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Holiday” and the album’s title track.

The LP later garnered the band — which, alongside Armstrong, 53, includes Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool — their first seven Grammy nominations.

The recent release also included a 110-minute documentary, 20 Years of American Idiot, which featured new interviews with members of the band and archival footage of old performances.
